Our Parks & Pool: A Community Timeline

A brief look at how Columbine Knolls parks and pool were built, expanded, and funded over time.

1964

District Formation
The Columbine Knolls Grove Metropolitan Recreation District is formally created to serve the growing community.

1960s

Original Facilities Constructed
Columbine Knolls Pool and park facilities are built to serve neighborhood residents.

1972

Early Expansion
The swimming pool is expanded, and tennis courts and playground amenities are added to meet growing demand.

1975–1978

Marker Park Created
Voters approve a bond to build what is now known as Marker Park.
Park land is acquired primarily through outside funding sources.

1983–1997

Grant‑Funded Improvements Era
Major improvements are made at both the pool and Marker Park with significant support from Jefferson County Open Space grants, including:

  • Pool renovations and safety upgrades
  • Tennis courts, shelters, and parking
  • Irrigation, landscaping, and playground improvements

1995

Last Major Tax Adjustment
The last significant mill levy increase is approved by voters.

1998

Athletic & Pool Upgrades
Ballfield renovations and pool improvements are completed using grant funding and partnerships.

2000–2013

Modernization & Accessibility Improvements include:

  • ADA upgrades
  • Tennis court renovations
  • Parking lot expansions
  • Pool amenities and site improvements

2017

Largest Capital Investment
The swimming pool building is replaced — the largest capital project in district history.

Today

A Changing Funding Reality
Most facilities are now 40–60 years old.
Large external grant funding is no longer available, and the Board is beginning a community conversation about how to responsibly maintain existing parks and the pool for future generations.

Looking Ahead

This timeline reflects long‑term community investment, careful financial stewardship, and the changing realities of funding public infrastructure.
Any future funding decisions would involve transparency, public engagement, and voter approval.
